At RISE TOGETHER, we’ve built our entire movement around one simple truth:
Stories change lives.
Not the picture-perfect ones—but the real, vulnerable ones. The stories that speak truth to pain. The ones that say, “You’re not alone.”
But here’s the thing: it’s not just about sharing our stories—it’s about how we share them.
When lived experiences are told in an intentional, grounded, and healing-centered way, they do more than inspire. They connect. They educate. They move communities to take action. And that’s the kind of storytelling we believe in.
Peer-Led Prevention Works—Here’s Why
Over the last decade, we’ve trained hundreds of youth leaders to share their personal experiences in a way that creates connection and positive impact—without causing further harm to themselves or others. This is the heart of peer-led prevention: equipping young people to lead conversations with courage, clarity, and care.
According to the CDC, students who feel connected to peers and school environments are 66% less likely to experience depressive symptoms or engage in risky behaviors.
Research also shows that peer-led programs grounded in lived experience can increase help-seeking behaviors by over 40%, especially when delivered with guidance and support.
When a young person hears a peer say, “I’ve been there too—and here’s what helped me,” something powerful happens. They don’t just feel inspired—they feel safe. And that safety leads to action.
What We’ve Seen Firsthand
We’ve seen it in school gyms, in small group circles, and across virtual sessions:
- Youth who were silent at the start, stepping forward to speak
- Educators shifting their response from punishment to compassion
- Communities rallying around the voices of those most impacted
- Districts investing in prevention after hearing directly from students
Storytelling—when done well—can bridge gaps, reduce stigma, and build trust where it’s needed most.
